A lot of activity there.

Many of the resorts, say recreation officials, are building swimming pools, because they believe the lake water itself may be "chilly" for swimmers. As early as 1955, Mayor Tom Epps of Branson said the "country's full of strangers. Motels are filled up, restaurants crowded. Why, there's hardly enough room on the sidewalks any more for a couple of fellows to stand and talk Another sign of the times i is the fact that Branson has already bought--and installed--its first 250 parking meters. New filling stations, grocery stores, and trailer camps are sprouting up all over the area.

Branson voted $282,000 in bonds in 1954 for enlarging its sewer sytem and disposal plant, buying a new fire truck and its fourth deep well. A 1954-built school is already too small and Epps says the town will have to expand its city limits. But the big deal is the expected influx of thousands of tourists. Many thousands have already discovered this area as a top vacationland and indeed have been coming here for years. With the attractions of the of the Hills scenic countryside, museums, historic Shepherd, sites, parks, lakes, outdoor legitimate theater and about all the variety anyone could want anywhere, this area has served, faithfully as Missouri's oldest developed tourist region.

But the Table Rock Dam is not only helping Taneycomo regain its stature as a top fishing lake, but is creating a huge lake itself, to be called Table Rock Lake, covering a shoreline of 857 miles, most of it in Stone and some in Barry and Taney counties. Taking a little closer look, here's what the Conservation people say about fishing: Some 45 years ago, Taneycomo was known as a fishing lake, and it's always been good (in fact in 1955 and 1956 it was number one for fishing hours spent). Butl BRANSON, MO. The famed "Shepherd of the Hills" area of Missouri--the state's oldest developed tourist playground--is getting a "new And recreation officials are predicting the area will become one of the "top vacation areas in the nation" within a few years. They're speaking of the multimillion dollar Table Rock Dam and the tremendous development which will really get its first big showing during the 1958 tourist season.

A lot has been written about one phase or another of the project-particularly about the giant $78.000,000 flood control and hydro-electric dam itself. But there have been few stories which "told all." In a nutshell, here are the plans established thus far: The Mi-cari State Park Board is developing Table Rock State Park--around 600 acres--with all types of recreational facilities. The Missouri State Highway Commission says some $8,791,000 is being poured into eight new bridges and relocations of routes -and the idea of making them scenic as well as smooth driving has been kept in mind in the planning of these routes. The Missouri State Conservation Commission says will be offering the "finest stable trout fishing in the Midwest." and some of the best trout fishing to be found anywhere. Some of the developments have already begun to show their significance in "things to come." For one thing, Branson last year enjoyed cool summer nights -most of them cool enough for jackets right in the middle of the summer.

Conservation officials Dan Saults says it's been proved that with just two generators working at the new 6400- foot-long Table Rock Dam, all the water in Taneycomo will over" every two and half days. "And that," says Saults, "serves to create a naturally airconditioned valley some 20 miles long." How about resorts, motels, and it's going to become noted now, for one particular species--lake trout. Table Rock and Taneycomo- as well as "sister lakes" Bull Shoals and Norfolk--are for fishing right now, of open course- in fact, the year 'round. The Missouri, Conservation Commission now has license from the U.S. Corps of Engineers for land on both sides of the White River below the dam.

On the south side, the Conservation will tie in to the State property Park and offer public access for fishing. On the other side, it will maintain a new trout hatchery, operational office and quarters. Stocking begins in earnest in late summer, 1958, although some 6,000,000 lake walleyes have already. been planted in Table Rock. Dr.

G. B. Herndon, Chief of Fisheries, says that "trout fishing in Taneycomo and below the dam will be exceeded no place else in the country and the new Table Rock lake should produce some of the best bass fishing of any place in the world." Everybody's pitched in to help on this. In fact, the U. S.

Engineers from Fort Leonard Wood (who maintained pontoon bridges for inundated areas) provided the Conservation workers with a huge boat, big enough to carry equipment necessary to plant the millions of walleye try right in the middle of the lake, instead of from the shoreline as planting is normally accomplished). Joseph Paeger, director of the State Park Board, has announced plans for a state park to utilize some 600 acres of land on both sides of the dam. State Park plans call for a lake front tent camping area, an area for trailers, a concrete ramp for private boat launching (free of charge), cabins, a seaplane dock, speedboat dock, restaurant, bathhouses, beach, shelterhouses, picnic areas and fishing boat service dock (the concession award for the fishing dock has already been made.) Low, 205 Danforth and museum for displaying Indian relics uncovered in the Table Rock basin. This was a result of some four years of work by the Archaelogical Department of the University of Missouri which unearthed findings at least 000 years old and representing evidence of seven distinct cultures or ages of Indian civilization. Table Rock Dam has already served its purpose--for flood relief and as an attraction for tourists. By 1955, some 20,000 (according to guide Rev. John E.

Chase) had visited an observation building to view the building of the dam. Last spring (1957), the dam averted a possible flood, holding back heavy rain waters from floding the lower valleys. Tourist trade, fishermen, business and industries are expected to flourish in the area, and Table Rock has now constiuted the last in chain of lakes reaching halfway across the state and offering a virtual tourist's paradise. The "new look" is good news for tourists--and the state's oldest developed playground area expects a flood of them in 1958.
