Fussen is one of the most popular fairytale-like towns in Germany. From scenic hikes and castles, this post will cover all the best things to do in Fussen Germany.

Known for its rich history, world-famous castles, and historic ruler King Ludwig, Fussen has become a desired destination for people all over the world. There’s one draw, in particular, that attracts millions of tourists from all over the world. Do you know what that is?

You have seen it a thousand times and heard the tales –but maybe never knew where it was. Does Fussen, Germany ring a bell? Maybe. Maybe not. How about Neuschwanstein Castle? Neuschwanstein Castle aka Cinderella’s castle is located in this picturesque Bavarian town. It’s one of the most beautiful towns in Bavaria – impossible to take a bad photo.

When I was visiting Germany, my boyfriend and I decided to take a day trip from Munich to Fussen. It was one of the most magical days we had on that entire trip. Fussen is located just outside Munich near the Austrian border. By train, you can get there in about two hours.

I recommend the train for its convenience and inexpensive cost. GoEuro is a great booking site for train tickets. They offer one-way tickets for as low as 20 euros. Check their schedules and purchase tickets here.

Hotel Muller: An adorable hotel in Schwangau near the popular Hohenschwangau Castle.

Things to do in Fussen, Germany

The following are the top 5 things to do in Fussen, Germany. The castle tours alone will take up a good chunk of the day, so many sure you catch the early train. You will want time to explore the villages and grab some food.

Snow White has to be around here somewhere.

Walk Around Hohenschwangau Village

Stop for breakfast at one of their many diners. If you’re like me then a little day rage is in order. Every restaurant around the village looks like a scene from Snow White. You should be happy with any of them.

Make sure to walk around the village and peak inside all the shops. The toy shop was my favorite. We bought crowns to go with the theme of the day. My best investment to date!

Stop by the ticket office to purchase your tickets. They have a few different options. You can pay for one castle: either Neuschwanstein or Hohenschwangau or a bundled package. I recommend going with both! There is tons to see in both.

To the castle we go!

Hike the Trail Up to Neuschwanstein

Starting with Neuschwanstein, follow the trail signs leading you up to the castle.

Horse-drawn carriages are available for hire (around 10 euros) and will take you to the top if you wish. A great way to set the “fairytale” mood of the day. Also, very romantic if you are with that special someone. Oh, la la!

Hello, I’d like to live here please.

Tour Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle is the workings of King Ludwig of Bavaria; although he never saw it to completion. He died during construction after going bankrupt.

His family turned the castle into a museum soon thereafter. That’s not to say this castle isn’t spectacular. Sitting at the top of the hill overlooking all of the lush green lands. Truly breathtaking.

DID YOU KNOW: Every floor had running water?

Something unheard of in the 1800s. The modern construction and technology of Neuschwanstein are both what drove King Ludwig into bankruptcy and what makes it so special today.

No wonder Walt Disney was inspired by this castle giving it the world-famous nickname “Cinderella’s Castle”.Today the castle offers self and guided tours, a gift shop, and a full-service restaurant.

Tour Hohenschwangau Castle

Unlike Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau is fully builtwith tons more to see. Hohenschwangau Castle is the childhood home to King Ludwig.

DID YOU KNOW: They have the oldest piece of bread here?

It has so much salt on it making it stand the test of time. Dare you to try it! Just kidding it’s enclosed in a case by what looks like the first Lay-Z-Boy recliner. Needless to say, this castle is filled with unique treasures and amazing views.

Fussen Germany Restaurants & More

Once you get back to the bottom head into town for more shopping and lunch. Stroll down the cobblestone streets and admire the true Bavarian architecture. Ahhh I love Bavaria.

If you are looking for food, Madame Plusch is a great spot. If the weather is good, sit out on the patio and admire the towns charming character a little longer before it’s time to head back.

I love Fussen, and I love hiking in the area, up the mountains around the lake. Did the castle tour, a little bit disappointed but everyone really goes for the facade as it is what Disney’s castle is based on. But the sausages in town…the size of them…..huggggggeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How beautiful. You are one lucky lady to get to travel and see a place like this. I could spend a week exploring here. It looks so incredible. I see why Disney was inspired.

My husband and I love Germany .. although we’ve never been to Fussen. When I was in college my jazz band spent three weeks traveling around to different pubs playing in the evenings and they were some of my happiest days. My husband has gone a number of times with friends and is completely addicted to German beer. If we go again .. we’ll add Fussen to our list. I’d love to see the castle!

I’ve been to Neuschwanstein twice so far but I only ever spent time at the castle and the touristy area down below.

Now I can’t wait to head back for a third time to actually explore Fussen! I remember driving through and thinking “wow, this looks like a nice place to check out”, but I never bothered to stop.

Ah well, next time! Thanks for the inspiration.
