What is the NMSU Scholar dollar? ›

Scholar Dollar$ is the singular application used by students and staff at New Mexico State University for processing, awarding and applying for scholarships.

Legislative Lottery Scholarship

Must enroll in college within 16 months after high school graduation or receipt of GED/HiSET. First-semester college GPA of 2.5 and pass 15 credits. Percentage of tuition. 2.5 cumulative GPA and pass 15 credits per semester for a maximum of seven semesters.

No application process, just enroll in an eligible college or university. You are 18 or older. You are eligible to receive the Opportunity Scholarship if: You are enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours at a public or Tribal college or university in New Mexico.

Scholarship Description

Awards range from $2,000 – $4,000 per student. In order to be eligible for Dollars for Scholars scholarships, you need to have a Dollars for Scholars affiliate serving your area.

Odds of Winning a Scholarship

Only about 1 in 8 college students wins a scholarship, and the average amount used to pay for college is about $4,200 a year. Very few students win $25,000 or more in scholarships each year (only about 0.1%). Among the students who win scholarships, 97% win $2,500 or less.

Scholarship winners are often announced within three months of the application deadline. How you will find out about your scholarship success will depend on who is awarding the scholarship. Often, you will be notified via the phone number or email address you provided in your application.

Though rare, some scholarships are awarded through a lottery system, where students' names are entered into a drawing and selected at random. To apply for these types of scholarships, you will usually have to submit an application and meet certain eligibility requirements.

If you are a New Mexico resident who recently graduated from high school or a GED program, the New Mexico Lottery Scholarship could cover up to 100% of your bachelor's degree tuition.

What happens if you fail a class with the Opportunity scholarship? ›

If you fail or drop a class and need to retake it, you do not have to reimburse us for the costs of those classes. The amount paid for those classes will be deducted from your maximum award amount which means you will have less funds available to complete your degree.
