  • Hydrostratigraphic and structural controls on streamflow generation in the Chuska Mountains, Navajo Nation, AZ/NM. Tsinnajinnie, L. ;; Frisbee, M. D.; ;; Wilson ...

  • A conceptual model of hydrostratigraphic and structural influences on 3D streamflow generation processes is tested in the Whiskey Creek watershed located in the Chuska Mountains of the Navajo Nation along the northern NM/AZ border. The role of hydrostratigraphy and structure in groundwater processes has been well studied. However, influences of heterogeneity due to geologic structure and stratigraphy of mountain blocks on 3D streamflow generation has received less attention. Three-dimensional flow in mountainous watersheds, such as Saguache Creek (CO) and Rio Hondo (NM), contributes significant amounts of groundwater from deep circulation to streamflow. This fully 3D conceptual model is fundamentally different than watersheds characterized as 2D, those dominated by surface and shallow subsurface runoff, because 3D watersheds can have much longer flowpaths and mean residence times (up to 1000s of years). In contrast to Saguache Creek (volcanic bedrock) and Rio Hondo (crystalline metamorphic), the bedrock geology of the watersheds draining the Chuska Mountains is primarily comprised of sedimentary bedrock capped by extrusive volcanics. We test this conceptual model using a combination of stream gauging, tritium analyses, and endmember mixing analysis (EMMA) on the general ion chemistry and stable isotope composition of water samples collected in 2013-2016. Springs that emerge from the Chuska Sandstone are tritium dead indicative of a large component of pre-bomb pulse water in d...

  • 3 nov 2021 · This study used the method to evaluate potential impacts of climate change on streamflow at Bernam Basin, Malaysia for 2010-2039, 2040-2069 and ...

  • The complexity of hydrological models has been a setback in their evaluation particularly for long-term simulations. Deficit and constant loss (DCL) method has been introduced in Hydrologic Engineering Center's Hydraulic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) model for continuous based simulations. However, studies on climate change impacts using the method are still very few. This study used the method to evaluate potential impacts of climate change on streamflow at Bernam Basin, Malaysia for 2010-2039, 2040-2069 and 2070-2099 to the baseline period (1976-2005) under two RCP scenarios (RCPs 4.5 and 8.5). The model efficiency during evaluation is found satisfactory. Compared with the baseline period, the predicted streamflow   decreased in all future periods during main and off-seasons. However, the changes have become more pronounced during the off-season with a significant decrease of 9.14% under the worst-case scenario (RCP8.5). Therefore, the Basin would likely experience tremendous pressure in the late century due to low streamflow, particularly in off-season months.

  • Hydrological reaction to climate change anticipates water cycle alterations. To ensure long-term water availability and accessibility, it is essential to develop sustainable water management strategies and better hydrological models that can simulate peak flow. These efforts will aid in water resource planning, management, and climate change mitigation. This study develops and compares Sacramento, Australian Water Balance Model (AWBM), TANK, and SIMHYD conceptual models to simulate daily streamflow at Rajegaon station of the Pranhita subbasin in the Godavari basin of India. The study uses daily Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) gridded rainfall and temperature datasets. For 1987–2019, 70% of the models were calibrated and 30% validated. Pearson correlation (CC), Nash Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), Root mean square error (RMSE), and coefficient of determination (CD) between the observed and simulated streamflow to evaluate model efficacy. The best conceptual (Sacramento) model selected to forecast future streamflow for the SSP126, SSP245, SSP370, and SSP585 scenarios for the near (2021–2040), middle (2041–2070), and far future (2071–2100) using EC-Earth3 data was resampled and bias-corrected using distribution mapping. In the far future, the SSP585 scenario had the most significant relative rainfall change (55.02%) and absolute rise in the annual mean temperature (3.29 °C). In the middle and far future, the 95th percentile of monthly streamflow in the wettest July is anticip...
