4 cups tomatoes, peeled, cored and chopped, or canned whole tomatoes, crushed
4 cups tomato juice OR part tomato juice and part vegetable or chicken stock

1 cup heavy cream
1/4 pound sweet, unsalted butter
salt to taste
1/4 teaspoon cracked black pepper

directions

Combine tomatoes, juice/and or stock in saucepan. Simmer 30 minutes. Puree, along with the basil leaves, in small batches, in blender, food processor (or better yet, one of those handy hand-held food blenders, right in the cooking pan).

I found this to be a wonderful soup! I used all tomato juice not a combination and I followed the recipe exactly. I thought the butter might be too much but it thickened the soup and added wonderful richness. A new favorite.

I've had what I believe to be La Madeleine's Tomato Basil Soup recipe for years and the ingredients listed are not the same. The one I use is awesome and worth a try. Ingredients 1/2 c bacon, 5 cloves garlic and 1 c chopped onion. Saute til onion clear and bacon cooked. The rest - 3 28 oz cans whole tomatoes, 2 c chicken broth. Heat all together with bacon mix. Add 1/2 c chopped fresh basil and 2 tsp balsamic vinegar. Then puree. Add 1 c half and half or cream at end and stir. S&P to taste. It is so inexpensive and so rich in flavor. I never at the S&P

I followed the recipe and the soup turned out to be quote watery and tasteless, by no means anything close to what we ate at La Madeleine about a month ago. I used a little corn starch to thicken it up, a splash of sherry and some garlic for flavor. At the end it turned out to be quite a nice soup...

La Madeleine's recipe for Carrot Soup with Tomatoes is closer version of the Tomato Basil Soup. Although, I substituted basil for the thyme and deleted the onions.

It is a good soup, but it does not taste anything like real thing.

I just prepared this soup for a luncheon I had for 7 of my friends. It was a HUGE hit! Everyone loved it and wanted the recipe. I followed the recipe exactly - even bought a hand held blender for the occasion. I just topped the soup with grated parmesan cheese and Italian croutons. Everyone had seconds!

I forgot to mention, besides the tofu and decreasing the butter, i also didn't bother prepping the tomatoes, i Just chopped up whole, unpeeled tomatoes and cooked them. I added 1c chicken broth.

I substituted the cream with soft tofu instead (tossed it in the blender with the soup) and used only 1/3 of the butter. Turned out creamy and delicious. I've never had a creamy tomato soup before, so i don't know how close it is to the original.

I have found if you try to bring the tomatoes to a simmer too quickly and let them boil too long it can alter the taste- IF you follow the recipe exactly this is the best and easiest cold weather soup there is!!!

That "chef" that said it tasted nothing like LeMadeline's Tomato Basil needs his friends to try. I had it one day at the restaurant and made it the next and it was exactly like the restaurant. I make it for all my friends and they love it. He's lost his taste buds.

This recipe was very good. My husband hates soup and he loved it. It is very close to la madeleine's version but its not quite as thick. Very simple to make too. This is a new family favorite.

Everyone that has tried this after I make it just loves it. It tastes just like La Madelines version. And it is very easy. I just use the canned tomatoes and don't add any salt.

This was not at all like the La Madeleine soup. Tasted like tomatoe juice. And yes we followed the instructions to the letter.

This soup is INCREDIBLE! Tastes just like Le Madeleine's. It's easy to prepare & quick. I made it for my husband -- who doesn't normally like tomato soup -- and it's now one of his favorite recipes.

This receipe was very close to the orginal. I would recommend this to anyone to try. I do suggest after cooking letting it set to cool helps it to thicken to the right consistency of the original
